The Occult and Magic As Superstition
100% of this rise in trendy occultism and magic is pure superstition.
I'm not saying the paranormal and the supernatural don't exist.
What I'm saying is, whether or not it does, let's be honest about what people are actually doing with magic and the occult.
What are all these enchantments, summonings, evocations, sigils and spells and deep dives into ever self recursive symbolism for? What is the end game?
It's so people get what they want.
Sure, ‘spirituality’ enters the mix, and people will try to better themselves and the world. But at what cost?
Usually little. Which means it's not worth anything.
Even cultures and cults with a more rigorous barrier to entry mainly serve to create some kind of enclosed mind control network which benefits a few founders.
People summon entities with dubious tasks and intentions, make themselves subservient to them and believe that said entities will then do their bidding.
It's just a slightly aesthetically altered version of what people do to each other anyway.
It doesn't make people better.
It doesn't make people happy.
It just gives them what they want, which is not the same thing as giving them what they need. Everyone wants a short cut.
I'm not anti people getting what they want.
I'm just suspicious of people accepting uncritically that everyone should just get what they want, or of people ignoring whether or not what one wants is good.
When I say that our modern engagement with the occult is superstitious, I'm not saying this in some kind of Reddit atheist sense. I'm not making fun of spirituality or the existence of God.
I'm making fun of fracturing your psyche and selling out to parasitic parts of yourself or reality (or whatever it is we're dealing with) for treats.
Giving yourself to atavistic forces, becoming neurotic for what you perceive to be ‘power,’ is a losing, time wasting game. It makes you vulnerable to being manipulated and malleable to people who claim to have secret knowledge or special contact with entities or unique information.
The magic people are doing today is magic that will die with them. They will have gotten some cool things and they will have gotten off, but all of it will be crushed forever under the weight of time and dust and sediment.
There is no substitute for truth.
Truth is the only real magic that does anything which lasts forever.
